    • Maslah Arts, You could also use hardboard if you wanted; I hear it can be cheaper but is sold in 8’x4′ or 4’x4′ pieces and has to be cut down to the size that you want it. That could be a good thing if you’ve got a saw of some kind. You can then cut it down to the size you want it and it is said by some, to hold up better for the oil paint not to crack. But I’m sure that with time that can still break down and would have to be kept up so that the wood wouldn’t basically, rot away. So, both would ultimately, have to be kept up. Also, the board has to have the gesso painted on both sides so it doesn’t warp. My brother painted on a hard board 20 or 30 years ago and didn’t know all this. The hardboard is crumbling. He’s passed away and we don’t know what to do to preserve it; as my brother was as good an artist as John and the rest of the best of the best painters. My brother started out in our garage, on his own without tutorials or any input from any other artists that knew anything at all about art, especially oil painting. And the things that we learn on the internet just weren’t available yet. My little brother has that painting now and the edges are crumbling. But you can paint on any wood; just remember to paint the back and edges with gesso, as well as the front. You never know; it may be your master piece.
Better yet, read this article: https://www.thoughtco.com/hardboard-or-wood-painting-guide-2578682 , if you want; it’s giving more information on the wood that what I knew about it and can recants what I’ve mentioned above. Apparently, My brother used the cheapest wood there was; but he was just a teen and didn’t work full time; so, his funds were low. Good Luck and Happy Painting. John’s one of the best of the best. Keep watching; He really teaches a lot.
